The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is on his way across the pond once again to the City of Lights to a little venue located in the heart of Paris, between the Forum des Halles and the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Sunset/Sunside Jazz Club, which was created in 1982 by Michèle and Jean-Marc Portet.
The restaurant was transformed upon the request of musicians and regulars who patronized, thus the basement with vaulted ceilings and great acoustics made the area perfect for an intimate club. It was the first club to open on rue des Lombards.
This week I’m landing in Paris to hear a new voice from Kansas City called Eboni Fondren. She comes to Sunside as the lead singer of the famous Kansas City Big Band. Because she has often been compared to Nancy Wilson, my all time favorite vocalist, I have to hear her unique sensual voice tinged with gospel and R&B and an innate sense of swing for myself.

The Jazz Voyager
Heading to O’Hare to catch a morning flight to NOLA to experience far beyond the French Quarter the city that gave the world Congo Square, Storyville and Preservation Hall. This week I’ll be sitting in the infamous Snug Harbor. Opening some thirty years ago in the Faubourg Marigny in the 7th Ward, it’s just downriver from the French Quarter and has been known as the place locals go for live music since the 1980s. Anchoring Frenchmen Street between Royal and Chartres Streets, there’s Live music 7 nights a week.
On the stage is bassist, composer, and bandleader Jasen Weaver who is a New Orleans native of New Orleans, who has established himself as a vital part of the city’s jazz scene and beyond. This will be this voyager’s first time witnessing his talent and of course will be at the second show at 9:30pm.

JACQUI NAYLOR
Vocalist and composer Jacqui Naylor returns to Snug Harbor following sold-out performances across Europe, Canada, Asia, and the United States.
With twelve albums and a dedicated global following, she is celebrated for her richly soulful voice, impressive vocal range, and distinctive arrangements of standards, covers, and original compositions. Naylor and her trio will perform selections from her 2024 release, Treasures of the Heart, along with fan favorites from throughout her acclaimed career.
She’s also known for her inventive arrangements that blend jazz standards with classic rock grooves and vice versa. She has headlined many of the world’s premier jazz clubs and festivals in the United States, Japan and Italy.

GERALD ALBRIGHT, KANDACE SPRINGS, THE DANGERFIELD NEWBIES
MABRA LAW and 91.9 JAZZ WCLK present The WCLK JazzFest featuring saxophonist Gerald Albright, Kandace Springs and the Dangerfield Newbies for one spectacular night of music.
Gerald Albright is a Los Angeles, California born saxophonist and bass guitarist who has been a central figure in contemporary jazz since the 1980s. He’s known for his R&B instrumentals and has played with artists like Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, and The Temptations. Albright’s solo career began in 1987 with Just Between Us and has included 19 albums, chart-topping hits, and Grammy nominations. He’s also toured with Phil Collins and Summer Horns.
Kandace Springs is a Nashville-based singer and pianist who blends jazz, soul, and pop with contemporary influences. Her smoky voice and piano mastery have led to performances at the Afropunk and Bonnaroo festivals, as well as a sold-out Royal Albert Hall concert. Springs cites Norah Jones, Roberta Flack, and Nina Simone as her biggest influences. Her father, Scat Springs, sang backup for artists like Aretha Franklin and exposed her to a wide range of music.
The Dangerfeel Newbies are Jamal Ahmad, Darren “DJ” Wagner and Mark Angel. Inspired by the story of Dangerfield Newby, one of five African-Americans in the John Brown party, this Atlanta-based trio delivers a set that is deeply rooted in blues, jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop & house.
