The groundbreaking collaboration between Gerald Veasley and Carol Riddick pairs two legends of jazz and soul music to celebrate an iconic artist. The act, consisting of vocals and three instrumentalists, has performed in many festivals, jazz clubs and churches to a sold-out crowds pays homage to “The High Priestess of Soul”, singer, song writer and activist, Nina Simone.
Simone was one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century; an icon of American music. She was the consummate musical storyteller, a griot as she would come to learn, who used her remarkable talent to create a legacy of liberation, empowerment, passion, and love through a magnificent body of works. She earned the moniker “High Priestess of Soul” for she could weave a spell so seductive and hypnotic that the listener lost track of time and space as they became absorbed in the moment.

CHRISTIAN SANDS TRIO | LIZZ WRIGHT TRIO
Opening Night concert of the Sarasota Jazz Festival brings some outstanding young talent to the area. The first set features Christian Sands (pianist) Trio. Sands is a protégé of the late Dr. Billy Taylor, Sands drew early accolades for his performances at the 2006 and 2007 Grammy Awards, as well as similar appearances alongside Taylor at the Kennedy Center. The closing set features Lizz Wright and her trio. Acclaimed vocalist Lizz Wright is a steward of American music bringing brilliant color and vibrancy to singular original works and the compositions by some of the greatest songwriters of our time. DES MOINES BIG BAND
The Des Moines Big Band, a storied ensemble that goes back to the 1950s, has played with some of the greatest names in jazz, from legends like Clark Terry to some of the more local household names such as Scott Smith. Led by renowned trumpeter/arranger Dave Rezek, this organization is in residence at Noce on Wednesday nights.
The band often invites high school & college groups in to play during the set break.

The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is being spirited off to Houston, Texas to the Cullen Theater for another performance of one of the hottest bassists on the planet and no it isn’t Ron Carter, though he fits the bill. This time it’s eight-time Grammy Award-winning Christian McBride.
Located in Houston’s Downtown Theater District at 501 Texas Avenue 77002, the theater resides within the Wortham Theater Center is one of the venues that Dacamera utilizes for its jazz performances. Under the artistic direction of pianist Sarah Rothenberg since 1994, DACAMERA programs create connections among musical genres, art forms, and ideas; between people and places; between the past and the present.
A force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman, McBride is powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing. Drawing from the lexicon of his hometown, Philadelphia, he calls his pianoless quartet The New Jawn.
