Jazz Voyager

It’s been a few years since the Jazz Voyager has been on the other side of the Atlantic but this week begins the tradition anew. I’ll be heading across the pond to experience a new city and a new venue. The city is Warsaw, the country is Poland, and the venue is Jassmine. It is an intimate place that fills the gap, embodying the history of a genre that has always neatly balanced on the thin line between elegance and freedom, concentration and element, reflection and downright ecstatic fun.

An old favorite alto saxophonist Vincent Herring will be performing tomorrow night who I haven’t seen in more years than I care to remember. With Joris Dudli the two musicians recall their long and fruitful collaboration with their latest, highly anticipated release Soul Chemistry. Together with rising star Erena Terakubo on saxophones, New York masters Gary Fisher on piano and Essiet Essiet on bass, this group has the perfect chemistry to create the intense, always soulful jazz of today.

The venue is located two floors below the intersection of Koszykowa and Wilcza, at Wilcza 7300-670. For more info go to https://notoriousjazz.com/event/vincent-herring-soul-chemistry.

The Jazz Voyager

The Jazz Voyager is crisscrossing the country once again and this week is heading to the Emerald City for this week’s destination. The club I will be relishing to the sounds of jazz is Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, and it is located in downtown Seattle, kitty corner to the Amazon Spheres where 40,00 plants from over thirty countries are housed.  The atmosphere within this small venue is a cozy bi-level 350 seats that puts me between five to 50 fifty feet from the stage.

This evening of music entertainment is with Madeleine Peyroux, who spent her teenage years busking the busy streets of Paris, France. Befriending the city’s street musicians she made its Latin quarter her first performing stage. Years later in 1996, her breakthrough album Dreamland sold a striking 200,000 copies and Madeleine’s dusky voice was likened to that of jazz greats Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

The venue is located at the corner of Lenora Street at 2033 6th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121. For those who want more info go to https://notoriousjazz.com/event/madeleine-peyroux-2.

Fortunately for this Jazz Voyager the next stop on the global road trip is an hour and a half up the interstate to the Big Apple. The destination is Carnegie Hall  where I’ll be sitting in the Weill Recital Hall. So many times have I strolled past this iconic venue on 57th Street to partake in lunch or dinner at the Russian Tea Room with friends. I have also on many occasions been in the audience for many concerts and tonight will be no exception to the fabulous performances offered.

Tonight this Jazz Voyager will be in attendance for the award-winning composer and pianist Lisa Hilton. She brings with her trumpeter Igmar Thomas, bassist Luques Curtis, and drummer Rudy Royston to round out her quartet. The music is slated to be  uplifting and new from the group’s latest release, Coincidental Moment.

The hall is located at 881 7th Avenue, New York City 10019. For those who want more info go to https://notoriousjazz.com/event/lisa-hilton.

Heading to the City of Brotherly Love for the next stop on the voyage of this traveller. The place I will be seated in for this week’s jazz performance is nestled in the Spring Garden neighborhood of Philadelphia and is called the South Jazz Kitchen. It’s known for the coolest jazz and Southern cuisine in the city.

Vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu and bassist Richie Goods collaborate on this stage for three nights with two shows per evening. When you put together an emerging contemporary percussionist and composer with the youngest bassist ever inducted into the Pittsburgh Jazz Hall of Fame and you get an exciting show and one you will never forget.

The venue’s address is 600 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19130. For those who want more info go to https://notoriousjazz.com/event/chien-chien-lu-x-richie-goods.

Heading to the place known as the Gate City of the South, A~Town or The A for another adventure in jazz. It’s a place where Blacks have historically come to enroll in higher education at Morris Brown College, Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse and Spelman colleges. It’s where Sweet Auburn was the center of Black business and prosperity. The city is Atlanta, the capital of Georgia.

This time it’s a venue called The Commons. The thirty-seven hundred square foot event space is located downtown and has all the amenities to transform this space into a concert hall from green room and rehearsal spaces, full sound and lighting systems to seating and risers. An excellent acoustic venue to establish the atmosphere every concert requires.

On stage will be one of the most promising male jazz singers around. Vocalist, lyricist, and composer Sweet Lu Olutosin embraces a philosophy unflinchingly on his journey to becoming a top 20 international Jazz recording artist. Comprising his quintet with him is pianist Louis Heriveaux, bassist Ramon Pooser, drummer Charles Marvray, and saxophonist Derrick James.

The venue’s address is 125 Ellis Street NE, 30303. For those who are requiring more information go to https://notoriousjazz.com/event/sweet-lu-olutosin.
