The Jazz Voyager

The Jazz Voyager is departing the Gateway City for The South once again and on course to land at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta. The weather is warmer and it wil be a welcome change from the cold of the past few weeks. This stopover is taking me to The Commons, an event space created by the First Congregational Church to provide an alternative venue for jazz performances, among others.

This week focuses on EC3, a man that I have been a fan and friend ever since this incredible drummer hit the airwaves of WCLK, and the very first time I played him on Serenade To The City. Now his anticipated Friday night return will be pulsing with more energy and heat to the city.

Reserved tables are already Sold Out, but you can still grab student tickets for $10.00 and general admission is $25.00.

The Commons is situated at 125 Ellis Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30094. For more information visit FirstFridayAtFirst.Eventbrite.com.

The Jazz Voyager

Since it’s winter in most of America ther’s no reason to put up the scarves, hats, gloves and coats that have been keeping this Jazz Voyager warm and healthy. Bundled up and heading back to the Gateway City for the ambience and music at Jazz St. Louis. Set within the Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz, the venue has grown since its humble beginnings in 1995.

This week I’ll be enjoying a favorite vocalist of mine, nine time Grammy nominated Tierney Sutton for her debut at the venue. She is joined by pianist Christian Jacob, bassist Trey Henry and the young drum phenom CV Dashiell III.

Jazz St. Louis is situated at 3536 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63103. For more information visit https://jazzstl.org.

The Jazz Voyager

New York is beckoning the Jazz Voyager to leave the cold of the Midwest to experience the familiar cold of the Big Apple for two new events. The first is a visit to a fresh old fashioned haunt that’s tucked away in Lefferts Garden called Bar Bayeux. Though it may be familiar, I’m desirous of warmer southern temperatures but the jazz and new adventures never stop.

The second event has me in the company of international recording pianist, organist, and accordionist Gary Versace who is one of the busiest and most versatile musicians on the international jazz scene. Leading this quartet date, he has been featured in bands of John Scofield, Maria Schneider, John Abercrombie, Anat Cohen, Al Foster, Regina Carter, Kurt Elling, Madeleine Peyroux, Matt Wilson, Ingrid Jensen and many others.

Bar Bayeux is located at 1066  Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11225. For more information visit https://www.barbayeux.com. No cover, one drink minimum but tips for musicians are encouraged.

The Jazz Voyager

The Jazz Voyager is flying east for another visit to the Motor City and some atmosphere and jazz at Cliff Bell’s. Starting out as a pub, turned speakeasy during Prohibition, it has become one of the premier jazz venues in the Midwest. I’m going to stop by Hitsville U.S.A. and take a nostalgic walk down the soul music memory lane before hitting the club.

I will be checking out a musician I have never heard before but is one who is keeping the tradition alive. He is a Grammy nominated saxophonist who goes by the name of De’Sean Jones and he brings his trio with him for the night. I’ll be catching the second set, as usual, just in case he decides to give anything extra.

The cover charge is $25.00 and Cliff Bell’s is located at 2030 Park Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48226. For more information visit cliffbells.com.

The Jazz Voyager

The Jazz Voyager is flying out west to make another visit to Canada for a little jazz and will be settling down on the Sea Island in Richmond, British Columbia at the Vancouver International Airport. I’ll have three options to get downtown and I’m not sure whether to take the SkyTrain, float plane or helicopter into Vancouver.

This week’s destination for jazz sits in the heart of the entertainment district at Beatty and Robson streets. It is the dimly lit, warm and intimate atmosphere within the four walls of Frankie’s Jazz Club. Inside the club we’ll be privileged to hear the singular sound of Oregon trumpeter Cyrus Nabipoor on his West Coast Known Entity tour.

Tickets range from $18.00~$23.00 and Frankie’s is located at 755 Beatty Street, Vancouver, British Columbia V6B 2M4 Canada. For more information visit https://www.frankiesjazzclub.ca.
