DAVE POTTER

“Pianist Marcus Roberts calls Dave Potter “one of the most talented young drummers on the scene today,” and the word that best sums up his playing is intensity. Potter got a late start, picking up the drum set in high school in Durham, North Carolina, where he was drawn to funk and fusion drummers like Billy Cobham and Dennis Chambers. Hearing Tony Williams’s early recordings with the Miles Davis Quintet changed everything, and with mentorship from trumpeter and educator Dr. Andrew Sioberg, he threw himself into practicing, listening, and transcribing.

That work earned him a scholarship to Florida State University, where he studied with Roberts and began a collaboration with Jason Marsalis that has lasted more than twenty years. After graduating, he was selected for the Louis Armstrong Quintet at the University of New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina cut that plan short. He later turned down a full scholarship to Juilliard to return to Florida State for his master’s degree under Roberts.

Potter was featured in the 2010 book The New Face of Jazz, which profiled the younger generation making an impact on the scene. Now based in Atlanta, he keeps a busy teaching and performing schedule and tours with the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet, Greg Tardy, Eric Reed, and Marcus Roberts. He also leads his own group, Retro Groove, whose third studio album builds on their self-titled debut with clever arrangements of ’80s hits by Whitney Houston, Rush, The Isley Brothers, Toto, and others, blended with swing and blues to win over jazz purists and pop fans alike.

MOSE DAVIS QUARTET

Because he specializes in creating uplifting music from all genres, Jazz, R&B, Pop, Rock and Gospel, in addition to movie scores and TV themes, Mose Davis has been called “The Music Specialist”. Classically trained at the Detroit Conservatory of Music, Davis is an exceptional jazz artist and prominent fixture on the Atlanta music scene and throughout the region. He moves freely between electric keyboards, acoustic piano, synthesizers, and his all-time love, the organ. Some of his musical influences include jazz greats, Jimmy Smith and Ahmal Jamal. Mose performs with top acts across the country as well as internationally. Such acts as Candi Staton, Marlena Shaw, The Funkadelics and The Fabulous Counts are among his favorites.

His current musical makeup, The Mose Davis Trio has shared the stage with Pieces of A Dream, Michael Franks, Ahmad Jamal, Roy Ayers and Frankie Beverly. He has made numerous appearances at jazz festivals, including The Atlanta Jazz Festival, The Macon Jazz Festival and the world renowned, Spoleto Festival.

NESTOR TORRES

Néstor Torres’ dynamic, unique sound is a blend of his Caribbean heritage with Classical training and Jazz improvisation. A prolific recording artist with 18 releases, earning him 5 Latin Grammy nominations, 1 Latin Grammy Award (Best Pop Instrumental Album), and a Grammy nomination (Best Latin Jazz Album), Torres has always challenged artistic expectations. The complex artistry of his work has been described as “highly infectious,” “somehow deeper, almost transcendental”.

Towards the celebration of International Day of Jazz on April 30th, Néstor’s performance will pay homage to his Jazz influences and mentors, featuring songs from his Latin Grammy nominated album, Jazz Flute Traditions. And, of course, there will be a healthy dose of Latin Jazz, Nestor Torres style…
