Pianist and composer Marta Sánchez, originally from Madrid, leads her acclaimed quintet with saxophonists Alex LoRe and John Ellis, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer JK Kim. Sánchez has gained significant global recognition and international audience with her innovative and original music. In addition to leading her own groups, she has worked with David Murray, Sara Serpa, Oscar Noriega, and Tim Berne, among many others. The Wall Street Journal reports, “Ms. Sánchez’s music is accessible and lovely, yet built on stark contrasts.” Downbeat adds, “As in her writing, Sanchez’s soloing favors lyricism, warmth and a strong sense of storytelling.”

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, vibraphonist Sasha Berliner, one of the most acclaimed new musicians on the New York music scene, leads an exciting quintet featuring pianist Mike King, bassist Russell Hall and drummer Jongkuk Kim. Her music has been described as a trans-genre, politically charged, jazz-alternative sound… a product of her diverse musical background and influences. “Berliner plays, composes, and leads her band with maturity and artistic presence rarely attained…and appears likely to occupy that upper stratosphere for some time to come,” reports All About Jazz. She won the 2020 Downbeat Critics’ Poll in the “Rising Star – Vibraphone” category and was named among the top ten vibraphonists in both the 2021 and 2022 Downbeat Readers’ Polls. Some of her recent notable performances and recording include collaborations with Tyshawn Sorey, Nicholas Payton, and Christian McBride and she has also headlined at the Newport Jazz Festival, The Blue Note, Montreal Jazz Festival, and Monterey Jazz Festival.

WNPR reports that “Herring fuses instrumental mastery with equal and unified parts of jazz’s holy trinity of heart, mind, and soul,” which is also a perfect description of this project. Something Else! was the only Blue Note album recorded by the great alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Released in 1958, it became an iconic masterpiece for its blend of heart, mind, and soul. Something Else!, the band, takes its inspiration from this soul-warming music with new arrangements and original compositions in the same spirit.
