SEAN JONES

Sean Jones, Visiting Artist-in-Residence, is a versatile trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator, and activist from Warren, Ohio. He began his musical journey in church choir before switching from drums to trumpet at age 10. Jones gained prominence as the lead trumpeter for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under Wynton Marsalis from 2004 to 2010 and became a member of the SFJAZZ Collective in 2015.

He has released eight recordings with his group on Mack Avenue Records, with his latest being “Live from Jazz at the Bistro” in 2017. Throughout his career, Jones has collaborated with renowned jazz musicians such as Illinois Jacquet, Nancy Wilson, and Herbie Hancock. He has performed with major symphonies and contributed to various music festivals. As an educator, he serves as the president of the Jazz Education Network and holds a prestigious chair in Jazz Studies at The John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute. He was previously chair of the Brass department at Berklee College of Music.

ARTURO SANDOVAL

A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval is one of the most dynamic performers of our time, and has been seen by millions at the Oscars, the Grammy Awards and the Billboard Music Awards. Sandoval has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards, and been nominated 19 times. He has received six Billboard Music Awards and an Emmy Award, the latter for his composing work on the score of the HBO movie based on his life, For Love or Country, which starred Andy Garcia. In 2013, Sandoval was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered praise from critics and audiences, and continues to do so.

He is joined internationally renowned Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes.

AMARYLIS SUEING

Amarylis Sueing began studying the saxophone at the age of eight. Her passion for music led to her artistry in jazz, popular, and inspirational music. She earned her Bachelor’s in Music from Clark Atlanta University and a Master’s in Music Technology from Georgia Southern University. She is a music technology instructor and an audio-visual director at Hoosier Memorial UMC. She has won awards as a faith and spiritual leader.

Jody Mayfield, a seasoned and respected jazz pianist joins her. He has performed with many jazz legends, including Dizzy Gillespie and Grover Washington, Jr. His talents are limited to smooth jazz: he has worked with some of the biggest names in hip-hop, and his company specializes in music for film and television. He earned a Bachelor of Technology degree from Morris Brown College and a Master of Music Technology from Southern Utah University.

GRETA MATASSA SEXTET

Award-winning, Hall of Fame jazz vocalist Greta Matassa has a new group these days and is featured in many of the areas best jazz clubs and concert venues. The new group features all new material and arrangements with a contemporary jazz bent. Although the songs may be new, there are classics such as George Shearing, Bill Evans, Chick Corea and Dave Brubeck. As well as jazz interpretations of Stevie Wonder, Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and Brazilian composers as well. As always Greta’s concerts also feature tunes from her 11 recordings and many of the classic jazz standards as well.

She was inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame in 2014. Her 40 year career has been a whirlwind of exciting opportunities and experiences. Over the last 20 years she has become established as one of the greatest jazz singers of her time. Working with top jazz musicians in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. In 2016 She was featured with bassist John Clayton’s group in a centennial tribute to Ella Fitzgerald.

She has recorded 11 CD’s. Her latest release “Portrait” on Origin Records is receiving rave reviews. She has been teaching for the last 20 years has become one of the most unique and respected educators in the field.
