The Jazz Voyager

Once again the Jazz Voyager is enroute across the Atlantic to Sweden for a little bit of jazz at Fasching. The jazz club and concert venue is located in the central part of the city at Kungsgatan 63, 111 22 Stockholm, Sweden.

Opening in 1977 and taking its name from the party that precedes Lent and Easter, it has grown to become Scandinavia’s largest organizer of jazz. With concerts numbering around 250 annually, they present both emerging and international musicians amidst full bar and restaurant.

This coming Saturday outing brings the Mike Stern/Dave Weckl Band to the stage for the nightly performance and this voyager is set for dinner and a show. Until then I will be scouring Stockholm for other jazz haunts, record shops and unknown attractions.

For information on tickets and online purchase, age requirements and other information the number to call is +46 8 20 00 66.

    The Jazz Voyager

While in Scandinavia the Jazz Voyager is jumping over to Finland to catch some jazz at the Koko Jazz Club in Helsinki. Situated not far from the center of the city at Hämeentie 3 00530, the venue is at the corner of Hämeentie  and Näkinkuja.

The music is staged in what looks like the workshop of the theater, it boasts a good acoustics and great sound system. This week the Jazz Voyager is going to partake in the music of the Jenny Robson Brasil Jazz Quartet presenting a combination of Bossa Nova and samba jazz with original compositions and classic Brazilian songs. As always one can get tickets and/or more information by calling 050-3219919.

    Three Wishes

When Pannonica asked Julian Euell (misspelled in book as Yuell) what his three wishes he was at no loss for words:

    1. “To be able to develop fully as a musician. I don’t want to be the top bass player, but to get close to myself.”
    2. “To be able to keep practicing with good health and energy.”
    3. “If one and two worked, I wouldn’t have to worry about security for my family, so for three I would like for club owners and record studios to become aware of acoustics, and to be able to hear how musicians really sound. If they can’t hear each other and themselves, they lose intimacy. And the same goes for audiences: why can’t they be like Carnegie Hall? You take a solo, project yourself, and then… they haven’t understood. This kills a guy.”
