The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager is flying out west to make another visit to Canada for a little jazz and will be settling down on the Sea Island in Richmond, British Columbia at the Vancouver International Airport. I’ll have three options to get downtown and I’m not sure whether to take the SkyTrain, float plane or helicopter into Vancouver.
This week’s destination for jazz sits in the heart of the entertainment district at Beatty and Robson streets. It is the dimly lit, warm and intimate atmosphere within the four walls of Frankie’s Jazz Club. Inside the club we’ll be privileged to hear the singular sound of Oregon trumpeter Cyrus Nabipoor on his West Coast Known Entity tour.

The Jazz Voyager
The Jazz Voyager will be landing in the Big Apple tonight heading to Broadway to help kick off the New Year at Dizzy’s by celebrating with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts on his 65th birthday. The club sits high above Columbus Circle with a backdrop of Central Park and the Manhattan vistas. It’s a view to remember.
This multi-Grammy winner and Guggenheim fellow leads an all-star band for a high-energy, four-night run, featuring saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, pianist James Francies, James Genus on the double bass, and guitarist Paul Bollenback. Tain’s distinct blend of swing, innovation, and soul, honed through collaborations with legends like Wynton Marsalis and McCoy Tyner, is sure to set the stage afire and raise the roof.

The Jazz Voyager
Heading to the Rubber Capital of the World for a night of jazz and photography in a downtown venue that boasts upscale yet accessible with a relaxing atmosphere. Traveling through the streets of the fifth most populated city in Ohio, this jazz voyager will be taking in the sights, sounds and public art that adorns the city of Akron. My eventual stop will have me landing at Blu Jazz On stage performing will be a saxophonist out of sister city Cleveland, The six piece jazz fusion and funk band Abstract Sounds envisions bringing dancing back to jazz. The Jazz Voyager
In the friendly skies once more and heading east to the city that never sleeps to enjoy the charms and culture of the downtown New York City scene. Staying at the Roxy Hotel will allow me to continue experiencing great jazz and all I’ll have to do is go downstairs and venture into the subterranean locale of the hotel to enter into The Django for an evening of jazz.
Seven string jazz guitarist, composer and arranger Ron Jackson will be taking the stage. His latest release is Standards and My Songs and I am hopeful I’ll be hearing some of that music during his performance.

The Jazz Voyager
Flying back to the West Coast and landing in that city by the bay to drive across the Golden Gate to Oakland to once again be a part of the audience at Yoshi’s with great expectations for another evening of great music.
This Jazz Voyager has a penchant for that side of our country. It’s a little over an hour from Napa Valley vineyards for those of you who want a little wine tasting excursion and a thirty minute drive to Muir Woods for some solitude to one of my favorite nature stopoffs.
This week I’ll be catching a musician I haven’t seen in a couple of decades and looking forward to seeing what new he has to offer. Grammy and Emmy winning pianist and composer Robert Glasper is taking the spotlight and bringing his new group Dinner Party with Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington and 9th Wonder.
