The Jazz Voyager

Delray Beach is the next destination for this Jazz Voyager. Had a great time in Buenos Aires but we know all good things must terminate on another ten hour flight returning home. The Arts Garage is this week’s destination and is a venue that presents a wide variety of music to a multi-cultural, multi-aged, multi-faceted South Florida audience.  I’ll be arriving at Miami International, taking the tri-rail to Delray Beach and then a Lyft to the venue. The venue doubles as a gallery, and the performance space is set up with eight seat rounds so you get to meet new people each time you go.

Cyrille Aimée will be gracing the stage for this particular visit and brings her Afro-Caribbean sensibility of the Dominican Republic to the music. A matchless interpreter of song, she has worked with Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargrove, performed at the Apollo in Harlem, got an invitation from Steven Sondheim to star  in a tribute and has received a Grammy nomination.

PATRICK WOLFF QUARTET

Featuring Matt Wilson

Patrick Wolff is a jazz saxophone and clarinet player with a long history in the jazz scenes of New York City and San Francisco. His playing has been characterized by a focus on lyricism and an embrace of the whole lineage of jazz styles. As one of SF’s longest running jazz groups, Wolff’s quartet has spent more than a decade honing a quirky repertoire focusing on overlooked gems of the bebop era and great American songbook in weekly residencies at Club Deluxe and the Redwood Room. For this special show, Wolff is joined in the front line by a frequent collaborator, the Bay Area’s grandmaster of jazz tenor, Noel Jewkes, in a mutual admiration society evoking the great two-tenor tradition popularized by pairings like Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons and Al Cohn and Zoot Sims.

GEOFFREY KEEZER & GILLIAN MARGOT

The Grammy-winning pianist Geoffrey Keezer is celebrated internationally for his highly regarded discography, unique compositions, and acclaimed performances in a variety of configurations. Keezer has been a major figure in NYC’s jazz piano scene since 1989, when he became the last pianist with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

Gillian Margot is a singer with a rare gift that makes people sit up and listen. She possesses an exquisite voice, a disarmingly wide range and a style that eschews jazz singer clichés in favor of an original, interpretive delivery grounded in a song’s lyrical and emotional content. A student of a generation of jazz legends including Oscar Peterson, Freddy Cole, Carol Welsman and Norman Simmons, she has since been invited to perform in major venues worldwide with top-tier talent, including rock icon Sting, jazz trumpeters Chris Botti and Jeremy Pelt, pianist Robert Glasper, famed soprano Kathleen Battle, conductors Wayne Marshall (London Philharmonic) and Jukka-Pekka Saraste (Toronto Symphony Orchestra).
