Daily Dose Of Jazz…

Aura Rully was born Aura Urziceanu in Bucharest, Romania on December 14, 1946. She grew up surrounded by classical music, as her father was a concertmaster with the symphony orchestra. Her vocal talent emerged very early and she sang from the time she was a little girl. She was a natural and a fast learner even though she didn’t take any formal lessons until her late teens. While she likes all kinds of music, jazz is her favourite. She was just over 13 years old when she recorded a big-band song.

She started scatting before she even knew what it was. She was just bored with the lyrics. She found out what scatting was when she heard Ella Fitzgerald do it. Her first appearance was as a guest on the Ray St. Germain Show. Sell-out performances at Club Morocco, the only jazz club in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada followed. It was there Ellington spotted her, taking some time out from a concert performance to drop by the club. After jamming together the next day, he sent her a ticket to New York and she performed with him full-time in the U.S. until his death two years later, in 1974. Over the course of her career, Aura has composed her own music and recorded four of her own albums.

She has toured and performed with Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Ahmad Jamal, Hank Jones, Thad Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Paul Desmond, Joe Pass and Mel Lewis.

Vocalist Aura Rully, who has performed as Urziceanu-Rully in America, continues to perform and record.

PHILLIP MANUEL

Influenced greatly by Ella Fitzgerald, Phillip Manuel is a gifted jazz vocalist with a poised, polished and gracefully lithe voice. Manuel’s rich baritone has been heard in many contexts over the last thirty years, from jingles and commercials to global tours with Terence Blanchard and Bill Summers.

From New York to Los Angeles, from Portugal to Paris, Manuel has graced the world’s stages with some of the biggest stars in jazz. Encouraged by Aaron Neville to take the leap for his first live performance as a youth, his voice has been described as dramatic, warm and full of soul. Some say his voice charms and seduces, and his range sounds effortless. His most recent album, 2019’s “PM,” finds him at his soulful R&B best, performing 12 original compositions—a marked departure from his other jazz recordings. While his musical abilities are obvious, Phillip is also an accomplished actor, writer and sought-after voiceover talent, including roles in classic New Orleans films such as Cane River and The Big Uneasy.
Tonight, Phillip presents his annual special Christmas Concert and his Birthday Celebration, performing music from his endearing Christmas CD collection, “Swingin’ in the Holidays.”

CARLA COOK

New Year’s Eve Celebration
Carla Cook + the Eric Reed / Vincent Herring Quintet

Carla Cook – vocals | Jeremy Pelt – trumpet | Vincent Herring – alto saxophone | Eric Reed – piano | tba – bass | Joe Farnsworth – drums

When Carla Cook sings, she swings. The Washington Post says, “She has sass that enlivens her impeccable diction, and tremendous soul that lets her swagger with gutbucket finesse, but it’s all buttressed with sparkling optimism and innocence.” Her improvisational style is steeped in the swing tradition yet eclectic and brimming with fresh interpretations.

Cook will be joined by Smoke’s Coltrane Festival “Countdown 2024” band, the Eric Reed/Vincent Herring Quintet featuring Jeremy Pelt, and Smoke’s Coltrane Festival “Countdown 2024” core ensemble. JazzTimes reports, “Pelt is a technical marvel. He executes intricate solos with ease, plays gorgeous ballads in a tasteful manner, and never lacks flair or sensitivity.” Audiophile Audition adds he has “the power and range of Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard in their seminal years.”

The group is co-led by the perpetually swinging Eric Reed, who All About Jazz says “has fully established himself in the forefront of jazz pianists,” and the fiery Herring who “has firmly established himself as one of his generation’s masters,” adds The New York City Jazz Record. It also includes one of the elite musicians working today, drummer Joe Farnsworth.
