Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 30 CD’s as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” Hot House magazine awarded him Best Guitarist Fans Decision for 2017.  He was recently voted once again as one of the top Jazz Guitarists in the 2019 Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls for the 10th time.

Warren Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore, MD. From the young age of three years old, Warren has been trained on the Vibraphone/Marimba, Drums, and Piano. Under the guidance of his father Warren Wolf Sr., Warren has a deep background in all genres of music. Vibraphonist Warren Wolf is one of the hardest swinging virtuosos in all of modern music.

SEAN JONES, DAVE BALLOU & REX RICHARDSON

Trumpet Project

Music and spirituality have always been intertwined in the artistic vision of trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator, and activist Sean Jones. He has performed at and/or with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis ensemble, SFJAZZ Collective, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson, and Marcus Miller. He is president of the Jazz Education Network and holds the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair in Jazz Studies at The John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Baltimore. As well as artistic Director for the NYO JAZZ Program of Carnegie Hall.

Trumpeter/Composer Dave Ballou can be heard in a variety of settings; from solo trumpet improvisations to large ensembles performing notated compositions. Ballou has performed or recorded with ensembles led by Rabih Abou-Kahlil, Steely Dan, Michael Formanek, Woody Herman, Andrew Hill, John Hollenbeck’s Large Ensemble, Sheila Jordan, Oliver Lake, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Dewey Redman and Maria Schneider.  Ballou is a Professor of Music at Towson University and member of the Jazz/Commercial music division and director of the Murray Jazz residency.

Renowned as champion of new, genre-busting music featuring the trumpet as a solo voice, Yamaha Performing Artist Rex Richardson was named the 2008 Brass Herald International Personality of the Year, has been called “One of the finest virtuosos of our time” (Brass Herald, 2018). A veteran of the acclaimed chamber ensemble Rhythm & Brass, jazz legend Joe Henderson’s Quintet and Sextet, William Russo’s Chicago Jazz Ensemble, and the world-renowned Brass Band of Battle Creek, his hundreds of soloist appearances include festivals and ensembles on six continents, such as the Phoenix Symphony and Thailand Philharmonic Orchestras, the U.S. Army Field Band and Tokyo Symphonic Winds, England’s Fodens Brass Band, and the U.S. Air Force’s Airmen of Note Jazz Ensemble.

SUN RA ARKESTRA

The Sun Ra Arkestra are known for their live shows that combine big band swing, outer-space jazz, dancing, singing, chanting and Afro-pageantry.

The Arkestra continue to tour the world and have performed in more than 25 countries including shows at the pyramids in Egypt and in the USSR, Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Jazz Festival, the Fillmore East, the Hollywood Bowl, Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, the Newport Jazz Festival, Fuji Rock Festival, and the Kennedy Center.

During World War 11 Marshall Allen enlisted in the US Army 92nd Division Infantry and performed in the Army band. Marshall joined the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1955 and has been their leader since 1995. He was awarded a PEW Fellowship in 2012. Marshall continues to compose and record with the Arkestra.  He tours with them when in driving distance of his home in Philadelphia and he greatly looks forward to the shows. An inner ear issue restricts his flying at this time.

STEVE DAVIS

Featuring voclaist/actress Abena Koomson~Davis, who has starred in the Broadway production of Fela!, and for over 15 years, Abena has been the lead vocalist of the funk rock band Van Davis. She is the musical director for the Resistance Revival Chorus, and her song “Joy in Resistance” is featured on their debut album, entitled “This Joy.”

Abena’s debut jazz album on WJ3 Records, entitled “Where is Love” features time-honored standards and original compositions co-written with her husband, acclaimed jazz trombonist Steve Davis.

The late trumpet giant Freddie Hubbard called Steve Davis, “one of the great trombone players in the world,” and whether on record or on stage, “Stevie D” and his group always produce compelling, enjoyable music.

Steve’s vocalist wife Abena is featured on this gig as she is on his newest all-star album, We See, his 21st as a leader. A protégé of both Jackie McLean and Art Blakey, Davis is perhaps his generation’s leading trombonist.

SALUTE TO FREDDIE HUBBARD & CANNONBALL ADDERLEY

Among the giants of jazz’s hard-bop and post-bop eras, Freddie Hubbard and Cannonball Adderley were distinctive pacesetters who stretched their talents while still making exciting, accessible music.

Their profound influence on contemporary headliners trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and saxophonist Vincent Herring cannot be underestimated and this all-star quintet pays tribute to their massive contributions. Last year, Herring and Pelt collaborated with other top NY musicians forming the supergroup Something Else!, named after a classic Cannonball recording.
